ETC's Executive Director, Heidi Wiley; Artistic Director of ETC Member Theatre Teatro Arriaga, Calixo Bieito; and our colleagues at Renew Culture were interviewed for this feature about the bold ambitions for the ETC Theatre Green Book, and Theatre Green book alike: a net zero theatre sector by 2030.

When it was launched in 2021, the Theatre Green Book was hailed as a landmark moment on the sector’s path to sustainability. Three years on, and as a refined second edition is released, its creators – and some of the theatremakers putting the guidelines into practice – tell Theo Bosanquet about their ambitious plans for the future and expanding across Europe.

The publication of the Theatre Green Book’s second edition marks a significant step forward for an initiative that, in the words of co-founder Paddy Dillon, was “absolutely improvised” and “ad hoc” when it launched three years ago.

It sprang out of Zoom conversations held during the pandemic lockdowns, about the need for clearer guidance for UK theatres and organisations around how to move towards zero-carbon status. Published in three volumes focusing on productions, operations and buildings, its primary authors were sustainability organisation Renew Culture (led by Dillon and Lisa Burger) and consultancy firm Buro Happold.... keep reading on The Stage
