The European Theatre Convention (ETC) welcomes President von der Leyen’s announcement during her speech at the European Parliament today that the name of the portfolio attributed to Ms Mariya Gabriel has been changed in order to include Culture, following a large mobilisation from the sector (see ETC statement from 16 September 2019).
Ms Gabriel will be Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth from 1 December 2019 and we look much forward to work with her and her teams in order to strengthen the theatre sector in particular and the European values of democracy, dialogue and tolerance through culture and the arts.
