In oversized pictures, Heinrich von Kleist tells the story of the impossible love between the Amazon queen Penthesilea - probably the best-known female heroine of all - and the Greek warrior Achilles. The drama surpasses all standards.
It is conceived as an affront to classical ideals and was received as such by contemporaries – above all by Goethe. Two hundred years later, the radical nature of the text seems all the more relevant and, for many theatre people, it is one of the most linguistically beautiful works of German classical music.
