Onkel Werner

Theater Magdeburg

29 September, 05 October, 2 & 15 November 2024

At Pension Werner somewhere in the (East) German provinces, the guests are staying away. So Werner has plenty of time and anger. Not even alcohol can help his messed-up life. To make matters worse, his ex-sister-in-law has moved in with him. Her career as a politician is over, but now she is bullying everyone here. But Werner won't let people like that cloud his mind any longer. Not even Michael, the emergency paramedic who plants trees on a voluntary basis, is notoriously overworked and just as unhappy. Werner is convinced that everything is going down the drain anyway.

A good hundred years after Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya, Jan Friedrich takes a look at our present day and searches for the driving forces behind our actions or inactions. What makes us what we are? And where does it come from, the monstrous shift to the right in our society?

Jan Friedrich (*1992 in Eisleben) works at the Oberhausen Theatre, the Mainz and Hanover State Theatres and the Schauburg in Munich, among others. His Magdeburg productions, ‘Woyzeck’ and ‘Blutbuch’, were invited to the renowned ‘Festival Radikal jung’ in Munich in 2023 and 2024.
