Boy meets girl. They fall in love. In order to get the girl, boy closes a pact with the devil. Boy shoots girl… This is, in short, the story of the German opera Der Freischütz (The Marksman). In the VR installation, the audience encounters the protagonists closer than ever possible in a real theatre – and in surreal spaces: Max in a mountain where rocks look like himself, his beloved Agathe in a two-tiered forest, her best friend Ännchen in a maze, and evil counterpart Kaspar in a tunnel of thorns in outer space.
The CyberRäuber (see website) have been exploring the field of theatre and Virtual Reality since 2016 – until now in theatres for drama and children and youth like Deutsches Theater Berlin, Theater an der Parkaue Berlin, Theater Dortmund, Nationaltheater Mannheim, Nationaltheater Weimar, Theater Baden-Baden. Digital Freischütz is their first work with opera.
