São Luiz Teatro Municipal has more than 100 years of history with theatre, dance and music, films and conferences. Part of EGEAC – the company of many cultural venues in Lisbon - the theatre belongs to the City Council, promotes accessibility, extended discounts policy, diverse audiences.
There are three stages:
- Luis Miguel Cintra for large presentations has 683 seats, its golds, red velvets and the unmistakable chandelier maintain the charm with which it opened doors and dazzled the city in 1894;
- The venue Mário Viegas has a smaller stage and 102 front audience seats;
- Bernardo Sassetti venue has an original painting by set designer Luigi Manini, natural light and huge windows, it accommodates from 142 to 270 people.
This venue is an accessible theatre, prepared to receive visitors and artists with specific needs or restricted mobility, with interpretation in PSL Portuguese Sign Language and AD Audio description.
Renamed Teatro República in 1910, it was completely destroyed by a huge fire in 1914 and with an architectural project by Tertuliano Lacerda Marques, reopened two years later. In 1918, it was renamed Teatro São Luiz and in May 1971 was acquired by the Lisbon City Council, gaining the name of Teatro Municipal São Luiz.
Today, São Luiz follows the cultural policy of Lisbon, wanting to assert itself as a forum where the public can have diverse, eclectic and differentiated access to all arts.
