Residency Placements
ETC is offering six placements at below Members Theatres as part of the Artists in Residence Programme 2024:

Teatro do Noroeste – Centro Dramático de Viana (Viana do Castelo/Portugal)

The drama department at Teatro do Noroeste – Centro Dramático de Viana is offering a placement as a second assistant director on the community theatre production of '18262 Madrugadas' (18262 Dawns).
A community theatre presentation of a work inspired by the Portuguese revolution of 1974- a collaborative work with non-professional actors from the company's Community Project.
From September until June, five groups of 15 non-professional actors aged 6 to 80+ years are being directed by five resident actors of the company. (this is not a part of the residency.) Each group will showcase their performance in May 2024. As part of the placement, the chosen scholar will get to see the five performances at the start of their residency. After that, all groups will work together to create a single performance out of the previously created five, and the resident artist will work as the second assistant director on that final show. The show is to be presented in the open air.
- Profile of the artist: A recent graduate or emerging professional director, motivated to participate in a collaborative creative process with non-professional actors. A responsible, theatre-driven and enthusiastic individual who is willing to learn about community theatre.
- Language requirements: Intermediate English or French or Spanish.
About the theatre:
Teatro do Noroeste – Centro Dramático de Viana was inaugurated on April 29, 1885. The independent company Teatro do Noroeste – Centro Dramático de Viana was founded in 1991 and it has been granted the status of resident company of the theatre, contributing to the high-quality cultural offer of the beautiful city and region, developed from its most emblematic venue.

Göteborgs Stadsteater / Backa Teater (Gothenburg/Sweden)
15 January 2024 - 15 March 2024
Göteborgs Stadsteater offers a placement as assistant director on the production of Bad Roads by the director Tamara Trunova.
"Bad Roads will have the first day of rehearsal and table read on 16 January 2024 and the premiere on 15 March 2024 at our Studio stage. We are excited to welcome an English- and Ukrainian-speaking assistant director to the team! It would be perfect if you could start the day before rehearsals, on 15 January for a proper introduction and a theatre tour."
The director and the sound designer speak Ukrainian, with some English. Therefore, a person speaking English and Ukrainian is needed.
The artistic team consist of five people: Director, set designer, light- & video designer, makeup designer, and sound designer.
- Profile of artist: Very good organising and coordination skills, since you will help the team and ensemble to schedule rehearsals, costume, make-up fittings etc
- Language requirements: Fluent English and fluent Ukrainian, Swedish is a bonus but is not necessary.
About the theatre:
Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden, and Göteborgs Stadsteater is the 3rd largest theatre in Sweden. The theatre company consists of three theatre buildings in Gothenburg with slightly different orientations (youth audience, guest performances - and our house - target group: adult audience for both classic and modern plays).
Slovak National Drama Theatre (Bratislava/Slovakia)

Slovak National Drama Theatre offers a placement in the field of directing / dramaturgy on their production of Odliv (Outflow) by the author and director Lukáš Brutovský.
The resident artist will be a dialogue partner for the director, observing the process of creating a performance based on a new play written by Lukáš Brutovský, who is also the director of this piece. The play deals with the problem of brain drain in Slovakia.
Lukáš Brutovský is part of the youngest generation of Slovak contemporary directors. He has maintained an intense directorial-dramaturgical dialogue with dramaturg Miroslav Dacho since art school, with whom he also cooperates in this project.
Scenography will be done by Juraj Polák, costumes by Kararína Holková.
- Profile of the artist: As this is a contemporary Slovak play written for our theatre, we are looking for someone familiar with or interested in the topic of brain drain: labor migration/emigration of educated people. If the candidate has a family history of similar kind, the better.
We are looking for directing/dramaturgy student as a dialogue partner for the author/director. Depending on the selected candidate, we will modify the exact role of the scholar in the process. - Language requirements: Intermediate English and a level of German that allows the scholar to communicate with the author and director. Slovak/Czech or any Slavic language is more than welcome but not compulsory.
About the theatre:
The Slovak National Theatre was established in 1920. Today it comprises drama, opera and ballet sections, each with its permanent professional company.
SNT Drama is a repertory theatre. The performances on all stages are held during the theatre season usually every day except Monday. The theatre season lasts from early September until late June.
Deutsches Theater Berlin (Germany/Berlin)
Can be decided later in arrangement with the scholar
DT Berlin is offering a general internship in the field of dramaturgy. The placement can take place at any time between January and June 2023. The exact dates will be arranged between DT Berlin and their selected scholar.
Deutsches Theater Berlin would like to offer a scholarship in the dramaturgy department of the theatre where you will get a good impression of the German theatre system. We are seven dramaturgs, and you will get to know our daily life. You can mostly decide on your own in which rehearsals or research you want to invest your time. Our department is closely linked to the theatre pedagogy team (four colleagues) and to the department of "context" (two colleagues). The dates of the placement can be arranged according to your schedule.
- Profile of artist: We would like to welcome a young professional who is interested in the field of dramaturgy - preferably a dramaturg, author or director. We would like to have someone with us who is social, open, and easy to be with, and who wants to give us an insight into the theatre of their country, so that we can also learn from you.
- Language requirements: Ability to speak German is absolutely necessary. It's our working language and you will not make anything out of your stay if your German knowledge is not sufficient enough. Experience tells us, we need to test the German skills of our favourite interns by phone or Zoom call. So please apply only if you are sure that you speak German well enough.

Deutsches Theater Berlin is one of the biggest and most important theatres in Germany, well known for the ensemble (36 actors) and being a pioneer in many fields. The theatre has three venues, produces 30 new shows next season and runs a repertoire of another 30 shows. Being with us will let you dive deeply into German theatre tradition and present.
Slovensko Narodno Gledališče Nova Gorica (Slovenia/Nova Gorica)

Slovensko Narodno Gledališče (SNG) Nova Gorica offers a placement in the creative team for the production of 'Much Ado about Nothing', directed by Ivana Djilas, an established director, writer and a publicist.
SNG Nova Gorica would like to offer a scholarship in their creative team working on a new version of Shakespeare’s classical comedy about two pairs of lovers with different views on infatuation. This version will focus on the conflict created when men return from the war after a long time and find at home the women who, during that time, got used to living without men – self-determination, independence, freedom. They are therefore no longer willing to concede power to them. This is where new reasons for entertaining altercations begin. Despite everything, as always, affection and love win, because men and women cannot exist without each other.
- Profile of artist: SNG Nova Gorica is looking for a person with theatre background (dramaturg, director, actor, set designer, costume designer) who knows how to function well in a creative team and who could join the project after the reading rehearsals phase.
- Language requirements: English (B2/C1, intermediate/advanced level) and ideally a language from the Slavic group. Balkan Slavic languages are preferred. (This will be a bonus, not a requirement).
About the theatre:
The Slovene National Theatre of Nova Gorica is a public institution funded by the Ministry of Culture of Slovenia and the City Municipality of Nova Gorica. It is also one of three national theatres in Slovenia. The theatre has its own ensemble of 21 professional actors and produces from eight to ten new performances per season.

National Theatre Kosovo
30 January 2024 – 31 May 2024
National Theatre Kosovo offers a placement as assistant director/assistant dramaturge.
National Theatre of Kosovo would like to welcome an emerging director or dramaturg to work on one of the productions that will be in rehearsal during the second part of the season. There are multiple productions planned for the period, and in agreement with the director of the show, we will let the interested scholars know about the most suitable project for collaboration.
- Profile of artist: National Theatre Kosovo is looking to mentor a student or a young graduate theatre maker.
- Language requirements: English
About the theatre:
National Theatre of Kosovo was founded in 1946 in the city of Prizren, Kosovo. It is the highest ranked theatre institution in the country, with the largest number of productions. The National Theatre is a public theatre in Kosovo and therefore it is financed by Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport. This theatre has produced more than 400 premieres which have been watched by more than 3 million spectators.
