THE TIDES OF TIMES
Chi-Yung Wong (KR)
Friday 01 November 2024 / 17:00 (60' loop)
Chapelle
Inspired by the poem The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls by American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, installation artist Chi-Yung Wong borrows its description of tides and waves to explore the subtle balance between eternal cycles and the fleeting nature of life. The work is a scenographic installation in which Wong uses delicate threads to symbolize human paths and connections, revealing complex patterns through his sensitive use of light, sound, music, and space.

A Chair for Co-responding” explores the correlation between human beings as living creatures and plants. Human energy – through body heat – is converted into electricity, powering a light that amplifies photosynthesis, leading plants to produce more oxygen, which is then redistributed to the audience sharing the same time and space.

In Christian tradition, the dragon has long symbolised the Apocalypse. Yet, in most regions of the world, the dragon was a symbol of authority and wisdom, capable of giving humanity the courage to overcome upheavals. But today? What would our dragon look like for centuries to come? With dancers born in the year 2000 – the year of the dragon – Korean choreographer Eun-Me Ahn draws from the vitality of Asia’s vernacular choreographic cultures to generate a new creature, guiding us towards the future.

With the arrival of robots, humanity suddenly dreamed of a lighter world, where laborious work would be a thing of the past. However, over the years, with the complicity of wild capitalism that uses them as tools for wealth accumulation to the detriment of everyone’s interests, robots have become the primary providers of unemployment. Alongside a namesake installation in the Salle des Pieds légers, “On the Bird’s Day” uses robotic movements to create a mechanical opera marking the beginning of a long exploration journey around the utopia of coexistence between humans and machines.
Kwon Byungjun, winner of the prestigious Korea Art Prize 2023, presents his work for the first time in Europe. His unique and delicate creations explore the relationship between man and machine, challenging the conventions of industry and questioning the place of the human in a utilitarian society.

What would it be like to be a tree, a rock, or a mountain? To feel the passage of centuries and seasons? In an immersive and sensory experience, “I am a Mountain” transforms the stage into pristine nature, invaded by cold and heat, wind and rain, by the scents of plains and deserts, the lights of dawns and dusks. Wandering on stage, the spectator is invited to let the elements pass through them, not to protect themselves from them, not to control them, but to let go and become a tree, a rock, or a mountain.
