Who is eligible?

Artists from all over the world are welcome to apply!

There are no set criteria for eligibility, but we recommend looking at the language and former experience requirements for each theatre, as these will vary.

The call is directed to “young artists”. Are there any age requirements?

From experience, the artists selected by our theatres have been between 22-35 years old. However, we don’t have any precise age requirement because we are aware that careers are not linear, and there are artists that are already very experienced at 30 just as there are artists who have embarked on a theatre career at 50.

In this case “young” can rather be understood as “emerging” in the theatre field.

We recommend looking at the tasks and profiles described for each placement - if there is something that you believe would be interesting to you and would bring you further in your work and learning trajectory: please do apply!

Can I apply for a placement in my country of origin / the country I currently live in?

The ETC Artist Residency programme promotes the internationalisation of career.

We ask you not to apply for a placement in your country of origin / the country you currently live in, and would rather recommend taking this opportunity as a chance to discover other cultures and ways of working in theatre.

Should I include my portfolio?

Only include your portfolio in an application if it is relevant to the project for which you are applying. If an application form asks for a CV, a portfolio will not be accepted as an alternative.

Should the CV include non-theatre work?

Your CV should include any experience you think would be relevant to your application and could help distinguish you from other applicants, whether theatre-based or not. 

What is the expected length of the motivation letter?

We recommend 1 page for the motivation letter, in any case not more than 2 pages.

Should the motivation letter refer only to my first choice or also to my second choice?

The host theatres are aware that applicants are asked to select two possibilities. The motivation letter should therefore ideally refer to both the first and the second choice.

The application form asks for a "reference contact". What does this mean?

Generally, it means someone who knows you from a university or professional context and would be ready, if asked by us or by the hosting theatres, to answer questions about your education, personality, skills. 

This is usually a bonus for the applicant as people who accept to be named as a reference contact will probably speak positively about you, and it helps expending your application beyond your CV and previous work experiences.

The CV and the motivation letter need to be merged into one PDF file. What does this mean?

We ask applicants to prepare "classic" and separate CV and cover letter (see the Application guidelines).

We ask you however to merge them into a single PDF document (there are different software or online services offering this), named as follows: LAST NAME_First Name. This makes it easier for us to manage the numerous applications and ensures that we do not forget any documents in the transmission to the theatres concerned.
